Stud Service Traditions

Being both bitch and stud owners, we have the advantage to see both sides of the "coin".  Some issues are negotiable and some are not, these things vary from person to person.  Even among friends, a contract for stud service is highly recommended and before co-owning a dog of any sex, a contract is an absolute must!
Customarily, the following items are needed to be discussed and agreed upon before the bitch is brought to the male for servicing:
          - Stud owners have the right to refuse any bitch they do not wish to breed (with the exception of those cases  when the stud is co-owned by multiple owners and the bitch to be bred is also owned by some of the co- owners; the breeding to owned bitches of the co-owners cannot be refused by other co-owners)
          - In a stud co-ownership the male can be homed primarily with one co-owner, but is usually placed in the home of the other co-owner for breeding purposes when needed, the costs of shipping the male back and forth are usually shared; a contract in co-ownership is of utmost importance before a dog is purchased jointly to determine this and other issues
          - The bitch is traditionally brought to the stud for breeding (the stud should feel confident to perform his duties and his own territory is best) however this can be negotiated especially when long distance breeding is involved
          - The stud fee is payable immediately after a proper copulation is achieved (or prior to shipping if the bitch is shipped to the male) and in whatever currency (forint, dollar, euro, etc.) the stud owner chooses
          - When the bitch is shipped, the bitch owner pays for the costs of the shipping, the costs of the stud owner to take her to and from the airport, her food and any vet care that is necessary during her stay; the stud owner has the utmost responsibility to: give the highest quality care to the bitch, make sure the breeding is successfully done and to return the bitch to her owner in the same condition she was received, hopefully with little Mudis on board
          - The stud owner will provide all the paperwork and signatures needed by the bitch owner to register the puppies at the time of servicing or when the bitch is confirmed to be pregnant or immediately upon the birth of the puppies, this is determined by the bitch owner; the paperwork should have all the appropriate spaces completed by the bitch owner prior to the stud owner signing them so they cannot be falsely used for another breeding
          - The stud owner's fee is traditionally paid in one of two ways, either with a puppy born from the litter (of the stud owners choice) or in cash; the bitch owner can choose to pay in cash only, but this issue is usually negotiable; the stud owner has the responsibility of paying any costs to get his/her puppy from the bitch owners residence; if a puppy is the chosen "fee" the time of selection and retrieval from the bitch owner should be pre-determined
          - The stud fee is determined by the credentials of the male (his tests, titles, offspring achievements, etc.) as well as the price that puppies are sold for in the bitch owners country of residence (Mudi puppies in some countries have lower prices than in other countries due to economic factors) the fee is negotiable, however bitch owners can take unfair advantage of naive stud owners in this issue, the stud owner has the right to ask how much the puppies will be sold for, the bitch owner has the moral duty to be honest
          - If the bitch owner has requirements for registering the puppies in their country that do not exist in the stud owners country, the bitch owner is responsible for acquiring them and paying for them, however the bitch owner will then also own the results, such as DNA results, parentage results and so on; if the stud owner would like to own the DNA test results for their further usage, then the stud owner should pay for the test, this item is negotiable, but knowledge of the test and where and how the results can be used should be fully understood by the stud owner (not all DNA test results are usable by other kennel clubs, for example, the AKC will not accept DNA test results done by European labs)
          - The stud owner can demand a recent brucellosis clearance test on a previously bred bitch just prior to servicing the bitch, this is not a common custom in Hungary/Europe at this time, the bitch owner can also request a test be done on the stud as well, this is negotiable but recommended to prevent loss of puppies and future breeding ability in both dogs
          - If no puppies result from the tie, the stud owner has the choice to refund the stud fee or allow another breeding at no additional cost, this is usually the right of the stud owner and decided prior to the servicing; if the bitch owner refuses another breeding then the stud owner is entitled to keep the stud fee as his dog performed the service and a re- breeding was offered
          - If only one puppy is conceived and born alive (as determined at the pregnancy confirmation ultrasound) then the stud owner has to choose to refund the fee or allow another breeding as previously agreed upon if no puppies were born
          - As long as two puppies are born, the stud fee is paid in full and there is no reduction or partial refund from the stud owner
          -  The bitch owner has the ultimate responsibility to place all the puppies in good homes, but the stud owner should share in this responsibility as much as he/she can and are requested to by the bitch owner.

Breeding a litter is the responsibility of both the stud and bitch owners.  Rescue and placement of abandoned puppies is not only the bitch owner’s responsibility.  If you do not think the bitch owner will be able to place all the pups in permanent homes, you should not breed their bitch.  Breeding should not be just about the money for either party.  Everyone is equally responsible for all puppies their dogs create.

Some stud owners unfamiliar with breeding customs and eager to see pups produced will allow breeding to their stud for a minimal fee. This is of course their choice, but recently we have heard of a new trend being employed by some bitch owners to pay a set amount for each puppy born rather than a pre-determined fee as is the traditional method.  This new method of payment is unfair for the stud owner as it allows a dishonest bitch owner to: not pay for puppies he/she chooses to cull, or misrepresent the true number of puppies born, or not give pedigrees to, or otherwise chooses not to pay for (such as puppies that are considered not show or breeding quality, etc.), or any combination of the above.  This trend allows the bitch owner to shortchange the stud owner very easily and we do not recommend allowing your stud to be bred with this provision.

It is not the fault of the male (in most cases) how many puppies the bitch has as the number of puppies born is determined by the bitch, therefore this new trend penalizes the stud owner when small litters are produced.  Regardless of how many pups are born, the stud owner is entitled to the price of one puppy and they should never end up with less.  To take advantage of stud owners in this way is not ethical and should be discouraged as there are less and less owners willing to keep their males intact and available for breeding as dog keeping practices change.  New trends are not always better than the old, especially when one party is at an extreme disadvantage as is a stud owner in breeding issues.

Our goal is to have all parties in breeding treated fairly and for good feelings to pervade long after the puppies go to their new homes.

All the best, Celeste and Péter
